Announcing June's Cute Pet Pix Jewelry Give-Away Contest!

It's Puppy's Cute Pet Pix Jewelry Give-Away Contest!!!! That's right humans...cash in on your four-pawed's cuteness power and get free bling from the Pig!

We have a pretty prize this month and already a few adorable entries! Puppy and I have been experimenting, trying to find the best way to run this contest. Our most recent version included a voting widget, where people who entered could vote for their pet picture and have friends vote for their entry as well. We have discontinued this version of our contest since we have learned that there are ways to over-ride the limits set on voting (once per hour) that computer savvy people know. To avoid cheating, disappointments and hard feelings, we are returning to our earlier format...because things associated with Puppy the Guinea Pig should only make people HAPPY!

so...

Here's how our monthly cute pet pix contest now works: each month, Puppy's mommy will list a new crystal or gemstone creation as the give away prize. As cute pet pix are submitted, they will be added to the slideshow widget on the right of the blog for everyone's viewing enjoyment and for the increased fame of the four-pawed's involved! New entries will be accepted until midnight PST of June 29th. The cutest photo's will be designated semifinalist (so level of cuteness definitely matters) and then the winner will be chosen from those semifinalist by random number generator!

To enter and be eligible to win you must:

1.) follow this blog (via google, blogger, yahoo, twitter...see widgets near bottom right labelled "Puppy's Fan Club")
2.) live in the US.
3.) submit a photo entry of your pet via email (JPEG file) with the pet's name, your name, mailing address and permission to post your photo on this blog. Entries may be submitted via email to puppylovejewelry@rocketmail.com .
4.) Please submit only one entry per pet per month (if you have several pets, you can submit one picture for each of them, as long as they are CUTE pictures!).
5.) I accept new entries throughout the whole month until June 29th, at which point this month's contest will be closed. The prize winner will be posted on our blog on Thursday July 1'st, 2010.
6.) I will NEVER give your email or mailing address to anyone else. If I send out a marketing email about a sale, you may get one however I sent out a total of 4 marketing emails last year so I think its safe to say that you won't be bombarded, and if you do get anything from me it will be cute!

Let the sharing of cuteness begin!

What is Gem Silica?

I just posted a chunk of gem silica as a meditation stone in my shop, and spent awhile writing an explanation of what this stone really is. Since I had to go to great lengths to learn for myself, I decided to post what I wrote here to share with others.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

So what is gem silica really? I have spent a few years talking to miners, rock collectors, reading and looking at stones to fully understand this. It was confusing to me because sometimes I would see a piece of gem silica selling for hundreds of dollars and other times for under $20.

Gem silica is the name given to highly silicated chrysocolla, also sometimes referred to as chrysacolla in its most gemmy form. Chrysocolla is a pretty blue green copper bearing stone that is opaque to light and often fairly soft as stones go.

Chrysocolla

It is actually composed of many microcrystals clustered together in a random pattern that does not let light pass through.  Under certain geological conditions, the chrysocolla can undergo chemical changes (ie. covalent and ionic bonds of its component elements can change over eons) and it can become more quartz-like, or chalcedony like.  This has the effect of making the stone more translucent to light (its structure becomes more ordered, although it is still not a perfect symmetric crystal lattice like what you would observe if you could see all the atoms in a quartz crystal laid out).  The color of the chrysocolla can often intensify and become more blue as it undergoes silication into its gem silica form. It also becomes very hard and durable, making it quite desirable for jewelry.

Gem Silica:

In terms of crystal healing, the gem silica stone still has the initial properties associated with regular chrysocolla-a wonderful heart chakra stone that carries an energy of healing and forgiveness. However, the properties are augmented in the silcated form, so that gem silica is also thought to also resonate with the third eye and crown chakras, and to be a powerful initiator of one's intuitive abilities.

The reason there is such variability in both price and quality of this stone on the market is because the journey from chrysocolla to gem silica is an undefined spectrum.  You will often see chunks of chrysocolla with a few tiny spots of silicated transparent blue being sold as gem silica for lower prices. You will also sometimes see the stone being photographed wet to make it appear brighter blue in color and even more transparent to light. The highest quality gem silica on the market appears quite similar to cyan blue jelly opal in color and transparency. Pieces of this quality will sell for hundreds. I have seen many inexpensive pieces of stone on ebay and at gem shows being sold as "gem silica" when they did not exhibit the chemical changes (translucency, color intensity, hardness) consistent with gem silica, so be careful. For those of us who utilize crystal healing, it is important that we are getting the authentic stone that we are searching for.
