How to Meditate With Crystals and Stones

To begin, here is a list of the some stones/crystals and the chakras they are associated with. The color of the stone often matches the color of the chakra but not always. Also please note that many crystals resonate with several of the chakras.

Base Chakra (Red)- Harlequin Fire Quartz, Garnet

Sacral Chakra (Orange)-Tangerine Quartz, Carnelian

Solar Plexus Chakra (Yellow)-Citrine, Golden Topaz

Heart Chakra (Green or Pink)- Chrysoprase, Pink Peruvian Opal, Pink Kunzite, Rose Quartz

Throat Chakra (Blue)- Aqua Aura Quartz, Celestite, Aquamarine

Third Eye or Brow Chakra (Indigo)- Apophyllite, Atlantisite

Crown Chakra (Purple)- Amethyst, Holley Lavender Agate, Phenacite

Grounding Stones to be placed below feet- Pyrite, Apache Tear, Jasper, Malachite, Hematite

Quartz Crystals (2)-To be placed one in each hand

The Chakras

What's a Chakra?

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel, or vortex, and it refers to each of the seven energy centers of which our energetic body is thought to be composed of. It is said by sensitives that from a side view, a chakra looks like a cone with its point plugging into your spine to receive energy, and it is opening about four inches from your body.

These chakras, energy vortices, or energy centers, are thought to function as pumps or valves, regulating the flow of energy through our energy system and transmit the life force throughout the body. This life force is called Prana by Indian Ayurveda doctors and Ch'i by the Chinese Doctors. Certain gemstones are considered in tune with these Chakras and are used to cleanse the Chakra and bring balance.

Why is Activation & Balancing of Chakras (energy centers) Important?

The human form is linked into multiple aspects of itself, each section expressing a range of frequencies or vibrations, within a network of zones of energy, spheres within spheres. Chakras are thought to be energy vortexes in our emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. The physical body is a series of separate, yet related systems of energy. This system is referred to in the ancient texts as the Chakras. A Chakra is thought to be the interface point between the physical and non-physical form. They lie along a linear pathway (along the spine) from the Crown Chakra, located at the top of the cranium, to the Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine. There are 7 primary Chakras with colors representing the 7 Rays. It is said that activation and balance of energy flow in Chakras allow the body system to be at optimal connection with the higher self.

Here is a little about how I meditate with crystals to get you started....

I guess there are many ways to meditate with crystals, but there are some basic things that everybody likes to go by and this is the way that I use and like best.

There are the 7 basic chakras shown in the picture above (actually there are more, but 7 main ones) kind of energy centers in your body. Well, they have colors associated with them too. An easy rule is to pick a stone the same color as the chakra for that chakra, although there is always some unusual ones that are different. And you can't mess up! Its not like something bad will happen and the universe will implode if you use a throat chakra stone on you solar plexus chakra!

The first or "base chakra", located at the very base of your spine, is about wanting to exist in the physical world, survival, passion for life. Some stones for it would be rough ruby, fire quartz or garnet, red jasper.

The second chakra, sometimes known at the "tribal" or "sexual" chakra, is located in your pelvis just above your pubic bone. Its color is orange and this chakra is all about relationships, connections, and again intensity. Some good stones would be carnelian or tangerine quartz.

The third chakra, the "solar plexus" is located between your ribcage and your navel. It is about our sense of self or ego (not in a bad way) in the physical world. It is associated with the color yellow and some stones would be citrine or topaz.

The fourth chakra (my personal favorite!!) is the "heart chakra" located in the center of the sternum (breastbone). This one is all about emotions and sadly it is where much emotional pain can accumulate. Now this one is different in that there are TWO colors associated with it--pink and green. This means there are a ton of stones for the heart chakra...rose quartz, jade, rhodochrosite, chrysoprase and pink kunzite, just to name a few!

The fifth chakra is the "throat chakra" located at the base of the neck. It is all about expression of course (not just speaking your truth, but living your truth, manifesting your truth, etc). Its color is blue. Some stones would be aquamarine and aqua aura quartz.

The sixth chakra is called the "third eye", located in the middle of the forehead just above the brow line. This chakra is all about your innate ability to see and perceive beyond what is in this world! And here the color system breaks down a bit. an indigo stone such as iolite is a good choice, but there are many others good for the third eye-herkimer diamond is a nice one! Apophyllite is also a good one!

The crown chakra is focused actually several inches up off the top of your head (at least for meditation purposes, the way I've been taught). It is a gateway to all of the chakras in your body and is associated with the color white! Quartz crystal is an excellent choice for this chakra as is amethyst or phenacite.

Now, when you meditate whith stones, you need one stone for each chakra, a grounding stone at your feet and two pointed crystals to hold in your hands (like nice sized quartz crystals or whatever you are drawn to).

The idea of grounding is that it drains any excess energy from us that we do not want there, kind of a negativity vacuum. Good grounding stones are Howlite, hematite, pyrite, apache tear and black tourmaline.

You proceed to lie down flat on your bed or a mat with a pillow for your head, a blankie near you in case you get cold, and your stones in a pile in your hand or within reach.

You begin by placing the grounding stone about 6-12 inches down from your feet. Then you lay the red stone on the base chakra, the orange stone of the pelvic chakra and so on up until you are lying flat reaching up over your head to set the crown chakra stone in place 6-12 inches above your head. Now you have all your stones in place--be still all they will wobble off! Take your two larger quartz crystals. Place one with the point touching the palm of your left hand and place the other with the point facing out in your right hand (arms should be resting out at your sides with the crystals in them).

Basically, once you do this you can then use whatever meditation technique works best for you. I like to deep breath imagining that I'm getting rid of everything that feels negative in waves going down to the grounding stone as I exhale. I do that for awhile until I feel a difference. then I focus on each chakra and the stone there starting at the base and going up, trying to build the energy there. When I get to the crown chakra, i imagine mine open with white light from the universe, god, whatever you wish to call it streaming in. Then I focus upon my hands. The left hand if for receiving the energy of the stone, so I just focus on letting that in. Then the right hand is for manifesting in this world what you want, kind of like holding a wand! That part is fun! I focus on everything i wish to create and manifest in this life (which has a much higher probablility of manifesting, when you are in a deep meditative state like that)! Then I just get quiet and try to still all thoughts so that anything can come in that I am meant to hear.

If you are a concrete thinker who wants to stick with the proven, there are numerous studies which conclude that meditation improves quality of live and reduces stress related illnesses. For those willing to consider the more abstract, it is said that regular meditation helps us to "raise our vibration", which essentially means make spiritual progress during our physical incarnation. People report seeing clearly on a creative and intuitive level during meditation. It is a worthwhile practice that crystals can enhance!

What is Gem Silica?

I just posted a chunk of gem silica as a meditation stone in my shop, and spent awhile writing an explanation of what this stone really is. Since I had to go to great lengths to learn for myself, I decided to post what I wrote here to share with others.

So what is gem silica really? I have spent a few years talking to miners, rock collectors, reading and looking at stones to fully understand this. It was confusing to me because sometimes I would see a piece of gem silica selling for hundreds of dollars and other times for under $20.

Gem silica is the name given to highly silicated chrysocolla, also sometimes referred to as chrysacolla in its most gemmy form. Chrysocolla is a pretty blue green copper bearing stone that is opaque to light and often fairly soft as stones go.

Chrysocolla

It is actually composed of many microcrystals clustered together in a random pattern that does not let light pass through. Under certain geological conditions, the chrysocolla can undergo chemical changes (ie. covalent and ionic bonds of its component elements can change over eons) and it can become more quartz-like, or chalcedony like. This has the effect of making the stone more translucent to light (its structure becomes more ordered, although it is still not a perfect symmetric crystal lattice like what you would observe if you could see all the atoms in a quartz crystal laid out). The color of the chrysocolla can often intensify and become more blue as it undergoes silication into its gem silica form. It also becomes very hard and durable, making it quite desirable for jewelry.

Gem Silica:

In terms of crystal healing, the gem silica stone still has the initial properties associated with regular chrysocolla-a wonderful heart chakra stone that carries an energy of healing and forgiveness. However, the properties are augmented in the silcated form, so that gem silica is also thought to also resonate with the third eye and crown chakras, and to be a powerful initiator of one's intuitive abilities.

The reason there is such variability in both price and quality of this stone on the market is because the journey from chrysocolla to gem silica is an undefined spectrum. You will often see chunks of chrysocolla with a few tiny spots of silicated transparent blue being sold as gem silica for lower prices. You will also sometimes see the stone being photographed wet to make it appear brighter blue in color and even more transparent to light. The highest quality gem silica on the market appears quite similar to cyan blue jelly opal in color and transparency. Pieces of this quality will sell for hundreds. I have seen many inexpensive pieces of stone on ebay and at gem shows being sold as "gem silica" when they did not exhibit the chemical changes (translucency, color intensity, hardness) consistent with gem silica, so be careful. For those of us who utilize crystal healing, it is important that we are getting the authentic stone that we are searching for.

Here's how it works: Each month, Puppy's mommy will list a new crystal or gemstone creation as the give away prize. As cute pet pix are submitted, they will be added to the white voting poll widget on the right of the blog for everyone's viewing and voting pleasure! You can size up your competition and if you are really determined you can come vote every hour! The voting closes on May 31st, at 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time. Whoever has the most votes at that time wins the prize!

Sterling silver is sculpted around a rainbow sheen Angel Aura Quartz crystal! A cascade of blue flash rainbow moonstone briolettes dangle from a sterling chain! A Swarovski crystal and miniature cultured pink fresh water pearls add charm!

Angel aura quartz (also called opal aura quartz) is created when a layer of platinum is alchemized to the surface of a quartz crystal, giving it a beautiful rainbow finish and enriched metaphysical energies.

I woke this morning to discover that our Director of Security here at Puppy Love Jewelry, Hoodwin the Guinea Pig, had snuck out of his pen in the night. I heard his little footsies pitter-pattering all around under my bed. I used a fresh carrot with the top on to lure him out and promptly took some photos of him eating it as I was overwhelmed by his cuteness!

Of course, Puppy became extremely jealous and immediately demanded his own treat, which I promptly gave him-his favorite, raddichio:

Well, this problem has plagued me for years. Actually, I have never been trick-or-treating in my entire life as I had a very hard and strange childhood and then never had human children as an adult (yes, I have thought of taking the Husky or Puppy the Guinea Pig, but have never followed through!).

Puppy has closed his ETSY shop!

Hey all! Just wanted to write a quick post to explain...after much thought, Puppy has made the executive decision to close our ETSY shop. We have had several bad experiences where people buy things and never pay for them on that site, which cost us a lot. Then last month, another seller on the site who bought a pendant from us virtually recreated it in every detail and sold the replica in their ETSY store. Artist often take inspiration from each other, especially jewelry makers and wire wrap artists, but this was an exact replica and we didn't feel comfortable with it. The website failed to contact us with any support after we waited for three straight weeks. We have decided it is not a safe venue for us to sell in at this time for several reasons. Because their fees were lower than Ebay's fees, were were offering items there at lower prices to pass the savings on to our shoppers. But it is very true that you get what you pay for..the lower fees have proven to show the lack of safety in this selling venue. We can no longer offer to sell our items there.

About this photo-shoot: Please realize that photo's like this should only be attempted with animals trained to pose for them. Also the animal must be constantly supervised throughout the whole process. Gideon was allowed to sit, supervised, with each portion of his costume, to smell it and become comfortable with it. After several trials of trying it on and taking it off with no sign of objection, he was dressed for the photoshoot and pictures were rapidly taken (the in-costume portion last about 60 seconds). The costume is then quickly removed before he becomes unhappy with wearing it or attempts to eat it. He is then promptly rewarded with the fruit or vegetable of his choice!

Announcing...the newly crowned Christmas Mouse of 2009! Gideon Shmeegle! All Hail to the Christmas Mouse! Long Live the Christmas Mouse! Hurray!

Gideon Shmeegle's little heart is filled with joy and he would like me to thank all of his adoring fans who made his dream come true!

Gideon came to join our herd about a year ago. Within weeks, a lump was noticed growing in his neck by his vet. It did not respond to antibiotic therapy and multiple new lumps appeared, one under his arm. It was felt that Gideon was suffering from lymphoma. He was spared any poking into the lumps as it was thought this would not help him and only serve human curiosity.

The lumps grew to huge proportions so that gideon could barely lift his head. He slept most of the day. I had sadly grown to accept that he would likely soon cross over. Then one day, something wonderful happened. One of the lumps opened itself and drained to show that these were not cancer at all, but infection!

Within days, Gideon was in surgery having all of the pockets of infection cleaned out. Because things were advanced, the infection recurred, required a second surgery, recurred again and required religious wound care and antibiotic treatment which, along with much love, caused it to disappear complelety! Gideon was one of our many dear animal gifts from the universe this year, and it is indeed fitting that his adoring public has chosen him to be honored in this way!

The race for the crown in these past few days has been quite intense between Gideon and Puppy on Twitter. Puppy wishes Gideon well as he is in the Christmas spirit today, and is coming to terms with his loss as he plots new inventive strategies for next year's Christmas Mouse campaign.

Why would crystals have an effect upon us?

I have wondered this and other things about crystals since I was very young. One of the first things I wondered about them was why they had the inherent ability to "grow" in such pretty geometric structures with perfect smooth faces and surfaces much like man made glass but without requiring any molding or polishing. At first you might think it is gravity (which is the reason that a glass of water has a smooth surface on top) but crystals grow their smooth surfaces at all angles to the ground, showing that it couldn't be gravity running the show.

My perspective on physical reality has changed and grown so much since I first wondered that, and yet the answer as to why crystals can effect us and why they form the perfect surfaces comes from the same principle.

We all pretty much understand about the different phases of matter:

gas (molecules bouncing all over, little order)

liquid (molecules sliding around, still moving fast, little order)

and solid (molecules vibrating in place to form a condensed object that we see as solid matter)

(By the way, this would be a picture of an amorphous solid, such as glass or the wood of your desk)

Well, when something is in its true crystalline form, the molecules have lined up into a perfectly ordered structure based in part on the charges of the atoms that make it up.

For example, Celestite is strontium sulfate (SrSO4, meaning each molecule of the celestite crystal is made up of one Strontium atom binded together with one sulfer atom and 4 oxygen atoms).

The way this molecule is put together, there will be certain areas that have a positive charge, certian areas that have a negative charge and certain areas with no charge at all--this is what dictates how these molecules of the celestite crystal prefer to line up with each other to form a crystal lattice (because, remember, positive likes to line up close to negative, areas of no charge like to be near other areas of no charge, etc.)

Looking at these pictures helps me to understand the answer to my childhood question: how can a crystal form these perfectly smooth glass-like surfaces on its own? Well, it is extremely ordered on a molecular level and if you keep adding billions of molecules in a perfect structural alignment, eventually you will be able to see the object's pattern with your eyes and it will carry that same order and structure, which can include very smooth surfaces or crystal faces.

Now, how does this tie in to why crystals would have an effect upon us in the physical world? Well, many of us are now understanding that everything in our world is energy, or vibration or frequency. We also have the principle of resonance: sound waves make objects vibrate in a similar manner. This is why you can hit one tuning fork and have one untouched but near it also start to produce sound. This is also why the most talented opera diva can sometimes hit a note that shatters glass!

So, if we believe that everything is energy and vibration in the physical world, including our bodies, our brains, our neurotransmitters etc, it would make sense that we could possibly resonate with the vibration or frequency of a physical object on some subtle level. Well, what object would you expect to have the most powerful, pure, amplified, unified vibration? The gas, liquid or even solid object without a crystal lattice structure (called an amorphous solid, an example is glass). NO! You would think that something possessing a crystal lattice structure would have the most magnified, pure vibration and have the most chance of having an affect upon our own vibration!

Voila! that is how I have made sense of crystals, on a very general level. there is much more involved and I am always thinking and trying to learn more, but this is a good place to start. I don't think it is a good thing to just believe what people tell you in this world, especially people who want your money! It is best to ask questions and think for ourselves. Do crystals effect us as living systems? Yes, there are studies that prove this which I will go into at another time. But the above is my working vision for WHY they could affect us!

Sterling silver (.925) and fine silver (.99) wire is sculpted around a very special blue phantom quartz crystal from Brazil, often referred to as a "Blue Tara" crystal (the name of a Tibetan Goddess associated with pure love and the ocean)!

I call this a 'talking crystal' because I acquired it from a woman who experiences what seems to be clairaudience when it comes to crystals (they speak to her). Winchesterette-The Pigeon Who Couldn't Fly (Told by Puppy The Guinea Pig)

OK, so about 2 weeks ago this pigeon sees all of us outside grazing in our pens with my mommy-girl sitting on the ground talking to us in a loving voice. Apparently the pigeon couldn't fly for weeks and had been walking around the neighborhood looking for food (we found out later).

So the pigeon sees my mommy and thinks "animal sucker!!!!" She looks all cute and waddles right up into her lap. Of course my mommy girl falls for it. She gets that thing to come into my house (oh, I'm used to this crap. believe me...its happened before.)

That bird stayed on its towel and was pretty good I'll say. It didn't even need a cage and would come back inside on its own. The mommy girl would pick it up and hold it. She just couldn't understand why it wouldn't fly. Its wings would flap a little more strongly each day. My mommy girl has a friend who can talk to animals...no kidding. Actually she has a few who can do it and she kind of does it with me but this one is really good at it. Her name is Mary Ketaily and her web site is italk2pets.com . Mary has talked to me when I've complained about my mommy changing my bedding and stuff and there was no way for Mary to know except me telling her. Anyway, Mary talked to the bird and it just didn't think it could fly. It said it had been sick. Mary and my mommy girl both told the bird it could fly and to keep trying. The next day it flew away. Now it comes back to visit. It sits in the yard all day begging for food and then flies home at night. What a pest. It better not try to eat my food!

This story was originally posted on my old blog July 2, 2008. Since that time, much to my landlady's dismay, Winchesterette and her offspring have chosen to live on my porch, often perching on my windowsills to say hello to me.

It started when Winchesterette built a nest and layed eggs out of season in the winter. I knew that she would likely loose the eggs as it was close to freezing outside, so I rigged up my portable space heater outside of bathroom window to blow gentle heat on her during the cold nights while she faithfully sat on the nest. After many cold nights, her babies were hatched (2) and I continued to supply them with heat on the cold nights until they were grown. She has gone on to have several babies (in the appropriate season thank goodness)....most of them stay very close to my yard even though my landlady forced me to stop putting food out for them months ago. They are kind creatures who seem to understand that they are safe here and we have developed an affectionate bond!
